In recent years, as people's awareness of sun protection has grown, a wide range of sunscreen products have flooded the market: sunscreens, sunglasses, sunscreen masks, and more recently, UV-protective clothing. Among these, sunscreen clothing has gradually become a popular choice for those seeking effective sun protection. However, not all products live up to their claims. Recently, UNIQLO faced criticism after two of its UV-protective garments were found to have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of only 16.95—far below the national standard of UPF 30. This incident sparked concerns among consumers about the reliability of such products.
Sunscreen clothing is still a relatively new concept in many parts of China. Many people are confused about whether a piece of clothing is truly protective or not. During a random survey at two malls in Beijing, only five out of 30 respondents had heard of UV-protective clothing, while the rest were unfamiliar with the term. According to Huayuechun from the China Textile Network Market Service Department, sunscreen clothing first gained popularity in the U.S. in 2007 and later entered the Chinese market. Currently, UV-blocking fabrics are mostly used in outdoor gear, with limited application in everyday wear.
The production of UV-protective fabrics is actually quite straightforward. Mr. Chen from Yingjie Textile Company explained that these fabrics are typically treated with UV-absorbing additives or made denser through special weaving techniques. Some manufacturers also combine ceramic micropowders with fibers to enhance UV reflection and scattering, thereby improving protection. However, most domestic companies rely on chemical additives to achieve UV protection.
China introduced a new national standard earlier this year: "Evaluation of Textiles' UV Protection Performance." This regulation states that only fabrics with a UPF value over 30 and a UVA transmittance of less than 5% can be labeled as "UV-protective." The label must include the standard number GB/T 18830, the UPF value (e.g., 30+ or 50+), and a warning that the protection may decrease with repeated use, stretching, or moisture exposure.
Experts point out that even regular clothing can offer significant UV protection. A typical T-shirt can block around 95% of UV rays. Darker colors like black provide better protection, and certain fabrics, such as polyester, offer better UV resistance than cotton or silk. A study by the British Radiation Protection Commission showed that light yellow cotton has a UV protection factor of just 7, while white cotton ranges between 33 and 57. However, even these fabrics may not be sufficient for sensitive skin.
For most people, regular clothing is enough to protect against harmful UV rays. But for those who spend long hours outdoors or have specific skin conditions, specialized UV-protective clothing is essential. These garments are designed to be lightweight, breathable, and comfortable, often featuring moisture-wicking technology to keep the wearer cool and dry.
When shopping for UV-protective clothing, it’s important to look for clear labeling that includes the UPF value and other relevant parameters. Not all brands provide this information, so consumers should be cautious. If a product lacks proper UV protection data, it may not be reliable. Additionally, repeated washing or stretching can reduce the effectiveness of UV-protective treatments, so it’s advisable to follow the manufacturer’s care instructions or consider reapplying UV additives when necessary.
Enamel Watch Dial
When it comes to enamel watch dials, I believe everyone is familiar with them. Its characteristics of being as warm as jade, bright as jewelry, and fine as porcelain have won the love of many watch fans. The Porcelain Watch Dial begins by casting a thin layer of liquid porcelain in a specially made plaster mould. Then, when the material is soft, cut the round watch dial of the desired diameter by hand. After drying, the watch dial is formed by hardening in a ceramic oven at a temperature above 1,200°C. On watch dials, they can be fired in pure colors, or watch dial cusotm, which can be made with precision enamel and painted with various ornate patterns. Of course, the complicated production process, which is not easy to oxidize and fade, also makes the enamel more precious.
