On October 28, during a hearing session, many women were seen wearing a variety of high-heeled sandals, eager to look their best. However, what many may not realize is that these stylish shoes could be the root cause of foot problems—specifically, a condition known as hallux valgus. Recently, a 25-year-old woman from Xiangfan City was admitted to the lower limb orthopedic department due to severe hallux valgus caused by prolonged use of high heels. Because her condition had worsened significantly, she required surgical correction.
According to Zhang Yunfei, director of the Orthopaedic Department at the City Hospital, hallux valgus is commonly referred to as "bunions" or "big jaws." It is a prevalent clinical condition with a high incidence rate. The main symptom is the big toe turning outward while the base of the toe moves inward, creating a bony bump on the side of the foot. This often gives the appearance of a triangular "snake head" on the front of the foot.
Zhang explained that while genetics can play a role in the development of this condition, it is more commonly seen in women who frequently wear high heels. Especially those who have worn pointed high heels for the past two years are at higher risk. In mild cases, the big toe may become deformed and shift inward, pressing against the second toe. These deformities not only affect the appearance but also lead to pain, redness, and inflammation due to constant friction from the shoes. As a result, patients may struggle with daily activities and walking, causing significant inconvenience.
Moreover, hallux valgus can lead to other complications such as a collapsed transverse arch, flat feet, and even the formation of bunions. To prevent this, Zhang advises women to avoid wearing high heels for extended periods, especially pointed ones. When engaging in physical activity or walking long distances, it's better to choose wide-toed, low-heeled shoes. If high heels are necessary, it's recommended to soak your feet in warm water after returning home and perform toe exercises to strengthen the muscles. Simple actions like gripping objects with your toes can help maintain foot health.
In addition to this, there are several practical tips for maintaining shoe health and comfort:
- Transform old shoes into stylish pieces by adding decorative elements.
- Don’t throw away old shoes; instead, let them "breathe" by leaving them open.
- Use insoles to provide extra support and cushioning.
- Clean matte shoes with gentle methods to preserve their finish.
- Wear breathable, antibacterial socks to keep your feet fresh and odor-free.
- Understand the hidden functions of sports shoes, including features you might not have noticed.
- Reduce the sound of high heels with simple techniques.
- Choose appropriate shoes during pregnancy to ensure safety and comfort.
- Learn how to deal with moldy shoes effectively.
- Be aware of the risks of wearing certain shoes in the summer.
Taking care of your feet doesn’t just mean choosing the right shoes—it’s about understanding the long-term impact of your fashion choices and making informed decisions for your overall well-being.
