He wears high heels to beware of hallux valgus

On October 28, during a hearing session, many women were seen wearing a wide range of high-heeled sandals. While these shoes may look stylish and elegant, they can actually be a hidden cause of foot problems. Recently, a 25-year-old woman from Xiangfan City was admitted to the lower limb orthopedic department due to severe hallux valgus, a condition commonly caused by prolonged use of high heels. Because her symptoms were so severe, surgical correction was the only option. According to Zhang Yunfei, director of the Orthopaedic Department at the City Hospital, hallux valgus is often referred to as "bunions" or "big jaws." It's a common and frequently encountered condition in clinical practice. The main symptom is when the big toe bends outward while the base of the big toe moves inward, creating a triangular shape on the front of the foot that resembles a "snake’s head." Zhang explained that while genetics can play a role, the condition is more commonly found in women who frequently wear high heels. Especially those who have worn pointed high heels for over two years are more likely to develop hallux valgus. In milder cases, the big toe becomes deformed and tilts inward, sometimes even overlapping the second toe. This kind of foot deformation not only affects appearance but also causes pain, redness, and inflammation due to constant friction with the shoes. As a result, patients may find it difficult to walk or participate in daily activities, leading to significant inconvenience in their lives. Moreover, it can lead to other issues such as collapsed arches, flat feet, and the formation of additional bunions. To prevent this condition, Zhang advised women to avoid wearing high heels for extended periods, especially pointed ones. When engaging in physical activity or walking long distances, it's better to opt for wide-toed, low-heeled shoes. If high heels are necessary, she suggested soaking your feet in warm water after returning home and doing some toe exercises to strengthen the muscles in your feet—such as gripping exercises with your toes. Other tips for maintaining healthy feet include: - Repurposing old shoes to transform them into something new instead of throwing them away - Keeping shoes breathable and avoiding leaving them closed for too long - Using special socks that are breathable, antibacterial, and odor-resistant to prevent bad smells - Knowing the hidden functions of the small tail on sports shoes - Learning how to reduce the noise of high heels - Choosing the right shoes during pregnancy—flat shoes may not always be the safest choice - Dealing with moldy shoes properly - Avoiding certain types of shoes in the summer that could harm your feet Taking care of your feet doesn't just mean looking good—it means feeling good too.
