Five times a year quality inspection Zara failed to quality "black list"

Zara has once again found itself on the quality "black list" after its products failed inspections conducted by the Zhejiang Industry and Commerce Bureau ahead of "3.15" Consumer Rights Day. The brand's items were found to be non-compliant due to issues with "color fastness to wet rubbing" and "use instructions." This marks the fourth time since August last year that Zara has been flagged for substandard quality in tests carried out by authorities. Consumers have also repeatedly raised concerns about the brand's quality on major complaint websites. According to a recent report, three Zara products were identified as "unqualified" during a monitoring campaign of imported clothing. One pair of trousers from Morocco had problems with "fastness to wet rubbing," while two other items—jackets from Turkey and trousers from Bangladesh—had issues with their "Usage Instructions." In response, relevant authorities have ordered these items to be removed from shelves. However, when a reporter checked with some Zara stores in Shanghai, it was unclear whether the problematic garments had already been taken off the market or if they were never sold there in the first place. This is not the first time Zara has faced quality-related scrutiny. Since August 2023, the brand has been involved in five cases of substandard product testing. Past issues include a 2009 incident where Zara’s sandals were found to be non-compliant, a 2009 case where its overcoat contained less cashmere than claimed, and multiple instances of poor quality detected in 2010 across different cities in China. Despite these repeated issues, many consumers still choose Zara for its fashion appeal. When contacted, Zara’s Shanghai headquarters asked reporters to submit questions via email and stated that they could not provide direct responses. They said all inquiries would need to be forwarded to the Spanish headquarters for further review. When asked about the availability of the problematic items in Shanghai, the spokesperson declined to comment. Zara has historically been reluctant to address media inquiries or take proactive steps such as recalls following quality issues. This lack of transparency has only fueled consumer concerns. **Glossary:** ■ "Color fastness to wet rubbing" refers to a safety standard that measures how well a fabric retains its color when rubbed against wet surfaces. If this standard is not met, dyes may bleed, potentially causing skin irritation or respiratory issues. Failure in "Use Instructions" usually involves errors in washing guidelines, incorrect product specifications, or mismatches between the implemented standards and the actual product.
