Five times a year quality inspection Zara failed to quality "black list"

Zara has once again made headlines for poor product quality. In a recent sample inspection conducted by the Zhejiang Industry and Commerce Bureau ahead of "3.15" Consumer Rights Day, several Zara products were found to be substandard. The main issues included "color fastness to wet rubbing" and "use instructions," which led to their inclusion on the quality "black list." This is not the first time Zara has faced such issues—since August last year, there have been four previous cases of non-compliant products. On major consumer complaint platforms, users continue to raise concerns about the brand’s quality. According to the latest report from the Zhejiang Administration of Industry and Commerce, three Zara items were identified as "unqualified." One pair of trousers made in Morocco failed due to "fastness to wet rubbing," while two other items—jackets from Turkey and pants from Bangladesh—had issues with "Usage Instruction" labels. As a result, these products are now required to be taken off the shelves. When the reporter visited Zara stores in Shanghai, it was unclear whether the problematic items were already removed or never sold in the first place. Store staff provided no clear explanation, stating that they were unsure about the situation. This is not an isolated case. Since August 2022, Zara has had five instances of substandard quality findings in domestic tests. Over the years, various reports have highlighted similar problems. For example, in August 2009, Zara's sandals were flagged as non-compliant in Shanghai. In December 2009, Beijing consumers reported that Zara's overcoats contained less cashmere than advertised. In early 2010, Zara appeared on multiple "black lists" following quality inspections in cities like Shanghai and Harbin. Despite these repeated issues, many consumers still choose Zara for its fashion appeal. When asked why they continue to buy the brand despite quality concerns, some shoppers admitted that style remains a key factor. In response to the latest allegations, the reporter contacted Zara's headquarters in Shanghai. However, the PR team requested that all questions be submitted via email and stated that no official comments could be given locally. They claimed that any response would need to go through the Spanish headquarters after further investigation. When asked if the problematic items were being sold in Shanghai, the representative declined to comment. According to previous media reports, Zara tends to be unresponsive when it comes to addressing quality issues. There have been few instances of proactive recalls or public statements regarding substandard products. **Glossary** ■ "Color fastness to wet rubbing" refers to a safety standard. If not met, it can lead to dye bleeding, potentially causing skin irritation or respiratory issues. Failure in "Use Instructions" typically involves unclear washing symbols, incorrect product numbers, or mismatches between the product standards and actual manufacturing.
