Indonesia imposes anti-dumping duties on China's wire and steel textiles and apparel and other products

The Indonesian government stated on April 12, 2011 that in order to protect local products from the impact of cheap Chinese goods entering the domestic market, the government will discuss the implementation of safeguards such as anti-dumping duties.

Hatta Rajasa, Indonesia's Minister of Economic Co-ordination, pointed out that safeguards or anti-dumping duties may need to be implemented because the sales price of Chinese goods in Indonesia is lower than the cost of production.

Trade Minister Feng Huilan said that at present Indonesia has imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese products such as wires, steel, textiles and clothing, and other products are under investigation.

Minister Feng pointed out that the government has instructed the KADI and the KPPI to understand the impact of the ASEAN China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA).

The Indonesian government has no plans to review the ASEAN China Free Trade Agreement. According to Kadin, the ASEAN China Free Trade Agreement that was implemented in January 2010 caused a large influx of Chinese goods and seriously hurt producers in most parts of Indonesia, although most of the Chinese products are of low quality. However, Indonesian consumers still choose to buy Chinese goods because of low prices. (A05)
